Wondering about Wikis

Does anyone have any advice for wikis.  I have a teacher that wants to start one with a group of students but is concerned about security.  She is uncomfortable with the idea that students can write to the wiki without any approval process before the editing is publicly visible.  I would prefer to have our teachers use one that has no advertising and very simple, uncluttered interface.  Some of the ones I have looked at, even the "education" ones are quite busy and might be quite distracting to look at.

Terry,

Wiki's are great tools for collaborative writing and you can set the privacy options that best suit your needs.

All of the wiki options that I recommend have an educational options that allows one to sign up for a wiki that contains NO ads.

Alternatively your teachers might want to use Google Docs - this allows students to work on a document in private and publish it when it is completed.

If students are posting on a regular basis and moderation is important the teacher might want to consider using a blog such as http://www.classblogmeister.com or http://edublogs.org/. Here is a great post from a teacher on using Edublogs with students...

Hope this helps - I am interested in what others have to say.

I use Wikispaces as do a couple of the teachers at my school. It is fairly uncluttered (if you apply for the free teacher upgrade). While you can't moderate the edits before they become public you can track them afterwards.
